To mark the 30th anniversary of the National Lottery, a special initiative was launched to honor extraordinary individuals across the UK who have significantly impacted their communities. This celebration, the Game Changer Awards, recognized people from all walks of life whose passion, commitment, and innovation have 'changed the game' in their fields. Subculture Media was tasked with creating short, impactful video content to spotlight the inspiring winners from Northern Ireland. Our objective was to produce cinematic and shareable films for social media, each capturing the essence of these community champions and the unique contributions they’ve made.
Our approach involved highlighting four distinct awardees from diverse backgrounds, including a boxing coach empowering youth, a marine biologist fostering environmental awareness, a youth worker supporting vulnerable teens, and a writer amplifying local voices. We set out to create films that not only celebrated their achievements but also showcased the transformative power of the National Lottery’s support. Each film was crafted to evoke a sense of admiration and pride, reflecting the resilience, dedication, and impact of these winners in an emotionally compelling way.
To capture the essence of these inspiring individuals, we adopted a cinematic approach that would bring out the full vibrancy of each story. Using a two-camera setup, we created dynamic visuals and engaging sequences that would stand out on social media. One camera focused on capturing wide shots and establishing visuals to contextualize each winner’s environment—whether a boxing ring, coastline, or youth center—while the other provided close-ups that emphasized personal expressions and moments of action.
Slow-motion was a key stylistic choice, enabling us to focus on the details of each person’s craft, adding a level of artistry and drama that enhanced the narrative impact. For instance, the boxing coach’s movements in the ring, the marine biologist’s work by the water, and the youth worker’s interactions all came to life with this approach.
Each video was designed with a strong emphasis on storytelling, making the viewer feel as if they were right there, witnessing these individuals at work. We used rich visuals and dynamic audio to create an immersive experience, allowing the audience to feel the passion that drives each awardee. The final edits delivered a cohesive, uplifting series that not only honored the winners but also underscored the National Lottery’s role in empowering change-makers across the country.
