Bangor Foodbank and Community Services (BFCS)

The Brief

Bangor Foodbank and Community Support (BFCS) approached Subculture Media to create a short promotional film that would help raise awareness of the essential services they provide across the local area. As a grassroots organisation based in Bangor, Northern Ireland, BFCS plays a vital role in supporting vulnerable individuals and families by offering foodbank support, practical aid, and a wide range of community-based services.

The goal of the video was to give people a better understanding of the work being done behind the scenes and to highlight the real impact BFCS has on people’s lives. It would be hosted on their new website and shared across social media platforms to reach more people, grow their support base, and encourage donations from those in a position to help.

They needed a film that was human, respectful, and honest, something that told their story with the care and dignity it deserved.

The Approach

We knew this project had to be handled with sensitivity and care. Our goal was to tell the story in the most human way possible, letting the people at the heart of BFCS lead the narrative. We approached it in a documentary style, using our high-end cinematic equipment to give the piece a polished, professional finish while staying grounded in authenticity.

We interviewed key staff and volunteers, capturing honest reflections about the work they do and the challenges they help local residents face every day. Alongside these interviews, we filmed observational footage of daily operations, including food parcels being packed, activity in the baby shop, walk-in consultations, and support groups.

We also filmed inside community classes run by BFCS, including parent and toddler groups, art therapy sessions, and communication workshops. These real moments gave depth to the story and helped show the range of support BFCS provides beyond foodbank services.

We were mindful of privacy and made sure that everyone who appeared in the film gave full consent. We didn’t film anyone without permission and worked closely with the team to ensure people felt comfortable, safe, and respected at every stage.

A key part of the project was documenting their new initiative, the Community Shopping Centre. This is a space where people can access subsidised everyday goods at affordable prices. It formed an important part of the film and helped show how BFCS is evolving its services to support people with dignity.

The Result

The finished video is a powerful and compassionate piece that brings the mission of BFCS to life. Through heartfelt interviews, intimate visuals, and honest storytelling, the film gives viewers a clear look at the need that exists within the community and the meaningful difference this organisation is making every day.

Shot in a cinematic style but led by real people and real stories, the film has already begun to resonate with viewers online. It will serve as a lasting asset for BFCS. Whether it is used to help raise funds, connect with new partners, or simply inform the public, this piece tells a story that matters.

We are proud to have played a small part in helping shine a light on such an important cause in our local area and even prouder that BFCS were so happy with the result.
